A Fathers Quest

Active Topic: Earthquake pt. II

I'm sorry posts have been slow lately, but I'm sure you know the reason why. All our thoughts are with the Japanese people. (I'm sorry the video above isn't in English, just click once to start).

Active Topic: Earthquake

Not long ago, a large earthquake just hit North-East Japan, with a magnitude of 8.9. I know this blog isn't dedicated to news, but I thought this was too big to not be mentioned. See the shocking footage for yourself here:

I just added the toolbox I promised to add in the previous post. Check it out here.

Lesson #18 Cartoony vs. Realistic

This tutorial is just to clear up some of the confusion regarding 'realistic' manga~ In this video, Mark Crilley draws a cartoony manga face, and then a realistic version after that.
Just pay attention to the difference between the two faces, note hair, eyes and the shape of the head~

Allright, I saw that BlowingInTheWind asked "Hey, what pens do you use?", I'll make a new page just for this folks~

Lesson #17 Inking

Allright, to finish up our drawings we need to add ink to the outlines. Here's a quick guide, by Mark Crilley~, on how to ink your drawings~
You don't need a fancy pen to do this, a normal ball-point pen works just fine~ Try and apply different pressures at some lines, it will make it look better~

Lesson #16 Mizore Shirayuki

Allright, in Lesson #15 I promised to make a tutorial on how to draw Mizore Shirayuki, the girl in the template background for this blog (this picture). Here it is~

Lesson #15 Realistic Faces pt. IV

Allright, this is a continuation of Lesson #14, just in profile, which means seeing the drawing from a different than regular perspective~
OK, pay attention the where the jawlines goes, and how the shadowing is done~

In Lesson #14, Alejandro Tlaie Boria put in a comment where he said "Can you make a tutorial on how to draw that girl in your background?", sure~! Now, I've noticed that you need a high screen resolution to see the whole picture, but here is it if you haven't seen it yet. The character's name is Mizore Shirayuki, and she is from the Anime/Manga "Rosario + Vampire". The tutorial will probably be posted towards the end of the day~

Lesson #14 Realistic Faces pt. III

Allright, since the eye tutorials are pretty much wrapped up, we're moving onto another manga style; the more realistic one. The procedure is pretty much the same as the comic style, just with a few special traits.
Notice the change in highlights and shades, they are what completes a realistic drawing.

Lesson #13 More Eyes pt. IV

Allright, this is probably the last lesson about eyes~ This lesson is a kind of continuation of 'More Eyes pt II', we'll just look at four new sets of eyes.
Take a look at the size of the pupils and the shadows in the eye, also look at the thickness of the lines~

Lesson #12 More Eyes pt. III

Going on with eyes folks~ Now this video by Mark Crilley is just amazing. In it, he draws 100 different eyes. Yeah, it's not just from just 1 manga style, but pretty much all of them, including one of my favorites; chibi.
Since he draws just one eye from each pair of eyes, try and pause the video, draw the one eye, and draw the other one as a kind of reflection of the first one. And yup~! I think we'll do a lesson on chibis later ^-^

Lesson #11 More Eyes pt. II

In this post we'll do More Eyes pt. II and a quick update, let's start off with the eyes.
Try and compare the four different sets of eyes, and find out what's unique about them~

After a couple of months we'll probably be moving from manga to western cartoons, and after that we'll race through realistic drawings.
Also, I'm going to draw a character that's all our lessons combined, and show you it's progress~

Lesson #10 More Proportions

Because I didn't feel that lesson #1 summed up all the propotions, I decided to do another lesson on it. This time we'll take a look into the female body proportions.
Note that the male body proportions use the '8 head' measure technique, but the female body proportions only use 7.

Lesson #9 More Hair

Continuing  from my last post, we'll look at some more hairstyles~!
If you're having trouble, try and make the proportions a little bigger, slightly increasing the hair size, and be creative

Lesson #8 Hairstyles

Allright, today we're going to take a look at some hairstyles. These hairstyles are the very basic ones, so adding a few details to it doesn't hurt ^-^
Take a look at the curves and the highlights in the hair~ Props to Mark Crilley ^^

Lesson #7 More Eyes

Allright folks, I didn't really feel that the last lesson summed up all the details about the eyes, because there's more than meets the eye (my god, I'm terrible with wordplay). In this lesson there's a little more details about the iris of the eye and the pupils.
Yep, another Mark CrilleyPay attention to what he says about the highlights and shades~
